Women’s Interest Blogs Don’t Get the Respect They Deserve

Image by Getty Images via Daylife I’ve had comments before, here even, about how women’s interest blogs…be it fashion, style, beauty, craft or decor are not really of interest to the general population. I feel like this stereotype is just reinforced by internet article clearing houses, like Digg, who ignore many of these niches entirely. There are interesting articles on the internet beyond tech blogs, but sometimes you would never know it. I’d like to point out that the very blogs that the big bad boys club on the internet chooses to ignore could actually be some of the best revenue generators in the long run:
- In response to “no one but chics read fashion blogs” I say “chics” account for about half of the population. I would venture more people read fashion blogs than football blogs.
- Female bloggers, are the demographic that almost every advertiser wants to target.
- The readers of Women’s Interest Blogs are also the demographic that almost every advertiser wants to target.
- Many Women’s Interest blogs are aspirational, an important element for many luxury brand advertisers. In fact, luxury brands have taken notice of us…Chanel flew bloggers over to Paris for a junket!
- Most of our readers have plenty of disposable income.
- As the taste makers of the internet, we tell our readers how to dispose of that income.
- Women’s Interest bloggers are not just “bored housewives” or “materialistic teenage girls,” and neither are our readers…although we do have count many housewives and teenagers among our readership. In case you have not noticed, about 80% of advertising is directed at either teenage girls or female heads of household.
- We are a large community, with social networks, well developed microniches (daily outfit journals, cheap and chic, chic and green, child rearing, decorating, crafting…etc) and even online blogging tools (polyvore) dedicated to us.
- Venture capital has even taken notice and funded some of the large women’s interest blog networks.
So, why do websites like Digg ignore us entirely?
Miss Elle from Broke and Beautiful has finally taken action and posted an online petition to have fashion added as a category on Digg, which I think would be fabulous. Don’t you?

Thank you, Sophia! I hope to get this rectified ASAP!
I feel really strongly about the “Fashion is for Girls” or “Fashion doesn’t matter” stereotype because it’s actually SO important! I love Kirtsy as a social bookmarking site, but we deserve to be able to play with the “big boys” on Digg, reddit, etc…!
xoxo!
